George Mann

Music Director, George Mann

George has served as organist and director of music at St. Julian's Episcopal Church in Douglasville from 1988-1992 and from 1995 until the present. In the fall of 2007, George won the composition contest sponsored by the Episcopal Church Diocese of Atlanta for his congregational mass celebrating the centennial of the diocese. His mass was sung at the Cathedral of St. Philip's, Atlanta, in the closing ceremony of the centennial year. This mass is frequently sung at St. Julian's along with other compositions and choral arrangements by George. The mass was sung at the concluding service of the Centennial year at St. Philip's Cathedral in Atlanta. In 2006, he organized a series of four concerts for the Cultural Arts Center in Douglasville, which have now become a regular part of their annual schedule.

George was recipient of the 2007 Georgia Music Teacher Association Teacher of the Year Award, an honor given in recognition of lifetime achievement as a music teacher. He taught at Kansas State College of Pittsburgh in 1971-74 and at the University of West Georgia in Carrollton from 1974 until 2003. He is currently adjunct faculty at LaGrange College as well as teaching in his home studio in Lithia Springs. He holds Bachelor and Master of Music degrees in Piano Performance from the College-Conservatory of Music of the University of Cincinnati. As a pianist, George continues to perform often as soloist, accompanist, and chamber music participant.

Choir

The adult choir of St. Julian's sings at the 10:30 Sunday service. Besides the four hymns (processional, sequence, offertory, and closing hymns), the choir leads the congregation in the sung portions of the service (Song of Praise; Sanctus & Benediction; Lord's Prayer; Fraction Anthem) as well as the psalm appointed for the day. The choir regularly sings special music during Communion and often performs an offertory anthem as well. A number of the choir members serve as cantors as needed. Besides the organ, other instruments are used occasionally (such as piano, violin, flute, guitar, percussion, etc.) In order to meet the musical needs of a diverse congregation, a wide variety of music is performed at St. Julian's ranging from Gregorian chant through traditional Anglican hymns on through more contemporary music. The choir occasionally performs a piece in Latin (with a translation included in the bulletin). In addition to singing at the main service each Sunday, the adult choir also performs an Advent Lessons & Carols service, Midnight Mass on Christmas Eve, and sings at services during Holy Week.

Choir

The adult choir rehearses from 7:00-8:00 on Wednesday evenings as well as 9:45- 10:25 on Sunday mornings and sings at services as outlined above.

We are always on the lookout for new voices. If you are interested in joining the choir please approach the music director, George Mann or any choir member. You can also call the church or email us. We would love for you to sing with us.
