Bible Meditation/Study: Stewart gave a reading from 1st Peter. Each member chose and discussed one thing from a number of miscellaneous items that reminded them of their individual gifts. Stewart asked them to think about how they can use the special gifts they have been given.
The Minutes of the July 17, 2007 Vestry
meeting were approved, by Motion.
FINANCE
Monthly & YTD Financial Statements
John gave out the July financial statements (attached). Items that show a monthly charge of zero are due to him being out of state when these bills arrived. A positive note is that pledge contributions have been increasing.
Financial Audit
John has written to the new head of Administration and Finances for the Diocese, Canon William Bennett, requesting his approval of an internal audit committee. (See attached.) Parishioners who have agreed to serve on the committee are Ken Flickinger, Kerry Bartone, and Alison Urbas. Plans are to conduct the audit in September of this year. John should be hearing back from Canon Bennett soon.
New IRS Charges
John received a bill from the IRS for $1,229.97 for underpayment of Social Security taxes and Medicare taxes for tax year 2005. (See attached.) Jeanette reviewed it and agrees with it. The bill has been paid but it is possible we may get additional charges for interest and penalties. We will be done with our back-tax obligation to Georgia in March, 2008, which will result in a decrease in expenses of $600/mo. This will cover part of the increase in our new mortgage payment.
Renewal of Mortgage
Our mortgage with Wachovia has been renewed. There was no mortgage payment in July due to Wachovia being slow in preparing the renewal paperwork. There will be two payments in August. A major milestone Ð our total mortgage debt is now below $600,000.
Vestry FinanceTraining
Eleni Papadakis from the Diocese indicated that theyÕre not yet ready to schedule Vestry Finance Training due to more pressing matters resulting from the unexpected resignation of the previous Finance Director. John will continue to touch base with her on this item.
Carpet Ð Will be replaced in the Gathering Space on August 23 due to error in measuring and different dye lots being used.
Blinds Ð The blinds for the Parish Hall have arrived and are awaiting installation. Several Vestry members offered to help.
OUTREACH
Newcomers
The luncheon on August 19 was a big success and had a very good attendance of approximately 40, including Vestry members. Leeman thanked all the members who helped with the event.
Helping the Needy
Since our first soup kitchen project was cancelled due to permitting issues, Pat will look into other opportunities, with an attempt to reschedule something during the month of September.
STEWARDSHIP
Debra reported on a Stewardship
Workshop she and Kerry attended on August 11. They were very impressed with the
content and the speaker. One of
the main ideas stressed was that if you tithe to God, God will supply your
needs. There was also discussion
of the various types of givers in a typical church, and how to get the various
groups to become partners to the church, and thus committed givers. Stewart will look into getting the
speaker to come to St. JulianÕs and speak to the congregation during the
upcoming stewardship effort. His
charge is $100 + $.70/mile. We may
combine a potluck lunch with his visit.
It also has to be decided who will serve on the Stewardship Committee
this year.
MINISTRY MONTH (and a Half)
Three Sundays in September and one in October will be devoted to thanking all those who give of their time and talents in some way to St. JulianÕs.
Sept. 9 - Will honor our organist, George Mann; the choir; and those involved in Christian Education.
Sept. 16 - Will give thanks for our Eucharistic Ministers, Chalicers, Acolytes, Lay Readers, Ushers, and
Altar Guild.
Sept. 23 - Will honor those involved in our outreach ministries: Starting Over, Meals on Wheels,
Honduras Mission, and Share House.
Oct. 7 - Will express appreciation to the Greeters, Coffee Hour hosts, Foyer Groups, and those who
maintain the church buildings, grounds, and gardens.
Stewart will ask Adrian to take some photos of our ministries and display them on boards in the Gathering Space, along with signup sheets.
PASTORAL CONCERNS
Stewart asked everyone to keep in their prayers those parishioners and their family members who are suffering serious illnesses.
The next Vestry meeting will be held on September 18 at 7:30 p.m.
